The effluvium and the defluvium
Effluvium and defluvium are terms that refer to two different types of hair loss:
Telogenic effluvium
It is a condition in which temporary hair loss occurs due to an abrupt interruption in the hair growth phase, called the telogen phase. This type of hair loss can be triggered by several factors, including:
- Emotional or physical stress
- Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period
- Diet lacking in essential nutrients
- Chronic or acute diseases
- Pharmacological therapy
- Major surgery
- Extreme weight changes
- Infections
- Environmental factors
Seasonal scent
Also known as seasonal telogenic effluvium, it is a temporary condition in which you experience more hair loss than normal during certain times of the year. This phenomenon is quite common and is usually not a cause for concern, as hair lost during the seasonal shedding tends to regrow naturally once the period of major shedding is over.
The exact causes of seasonal effluvium are linked to environmental changes and natural cycles. Some of the factors that can contribute to seasonal effluvium include:
- Climate Changes: Changes in temperature and humidity during the changing seasons can affect the hair cycle.
- Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun during the summer months may have effects on the scalp and hair follicles.
- Hormone Fluctuations: Although less common, hormonal fluctuations related to seasonal cycles could play a role in seasonal effluvium.
- Stress: Stress associated with seasonal changes or events specific to that period could contribute to temporary hair loss.
Generally, seasonal effluvium manifests itself with increased hair loss during the fall and spring, but it can vary from person to person. It is important to note that seasonal effluvium is usually temporary and hair tends to regrow once the seasonal cycle is completed. However, if hair loss persists or becomes excessive, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for appropriate evaluation and treatment.
Anagenic defluvium
It occurs when hair is lost during the active growth phase, called the anagen phase, of the hair cycle. This type of hair loss can be caused by events that damage the actively growing hair follicle. Causes include:
- Chemotherapy
- Exposure to radiation
- Exposure to toxic substances
- Some autoimmune or genetic diseases
In either case, hair loss can be noticeable and can have a significant impact on the appearance and self-confidence of those affected. It is important to note that while telogenic effluvium is usually temporary and hair tends to regrow once the underlying cause has been resolved, anagenic effluvium can cause permanent hair loss in the affected area.
If you suspect that you suffer from one of these types of hair loss, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist or a specialized doctor (never rely on trichological treatments carried out in a hairdressing salon unless in the presence of a Trichologist doctor) in the treatment of hair-related problems for an accurate evaluation and an appropriate treatment plan.
